I finally get around to blogging about an historic moment for me and the golfers of my book Mustang Miracle. On March 24, 2011, the Texas House of Representatives adopted Resolutions recognizing the accomplishment of the San Felipe Mustang Golf team of 1957, 54 years after the fact. When they won the state high school golf championship in 1957, it was with little fanfare or recognition. After all, who could believe that a team of Mexican American golfers, with no formal training, old and inferior equipment, who were forced to practice on a makeshift course, could win the ultimate prize. When they did, it was not well received by the powers that be. As a result, their feat remained unknown by most people outside the community of Del Rio, Texas. Once the book came out, people began to understand exactly what an amazing story it was for a group of young boys from the barrio to have succeeded in what many considered a white, elitist sport at a time when America was not very friendly to Latinos. The House of Representatives, on a motion by Representative Pete Gallego, voted to give the Mustangs the recognition they so justly deserved. They also recognized the book Mustang Miracle for telling their story about overcoming prejudice and adversity to achieve their moment at the top of their sport. The men, Joe Trevino, Felipe Romero, Mario Lomas, Gene Vasquez and Lupe Felan, and their championship are now permanently etched in the Texas House of Representatives’ record for all to see and appreciate.

I had my first book signing today in Del Rio, Texas at the home of the San Felipe Ex-Students. The response from the people of Del Rio was excellent. People who have ties to San Felipe High School which exists now only in the hearts of its former students are excited about the story of the victorious 1957 Mustang golf team getting out to the rest of the world. Three members of the team were also present to sign the book for purchasers and are looking forward to other signings. We will schedule another book signing soon. Thanks to all who attended and obtained their own copy of Mustang Miracle

With perseverance and determination, obstacles created by discrimination and poverty can be overcome. That is what a group of young Mexican American caddies from Sanf Felipe in Del Rio, Texas accomplished in 1957 when they captured the Texas High School golf championship.
